IP Logger is considered Gold standard for finding the true location of a suspect. The website commands huge respect among OSINT experts and investigators alike. The process involves sending special customized links created with the help of IP Logger to the suspect. Once the recipient clicks on it, the IP address and geographical location is revealed.
The process can be executed for a variety of purposes, which requires knowing the true location of a person. The location in turn can reveal/ expose the true identity. For example, consider getting a call from an unknown number, seeking sensitive personal information. You may get suspicious and decide to know the true identity, before divulging any PIIs (Personally Identifiable Information). Here, the link created by IP Logger proves handy - tells whether the person is at the place, where he/ she claims to be.
How IP Logger Tracking Link Works:
Fact Check: They said they were in the India, but IP Logger says South Africa!
Real Life Example:
A friend had placed old Indian coins for sale on the OLX website. The coins belonged to 15th and 16th century, and the friend hopes were selling high. The next day, he received a What’s App text from a number with code (+1) indicating North American account. The non-Indian number created suspicion - why a foreigner was showing interest in Indian coins.
The fraudster proposed to buy the coins at cost of Rs 0.3 - .4 millions, and sought details for UPI payment. Since, UPI payments are being used to de-fraud customers by sending debit link instead of credit, the friend became cautious. On further questioning, the purchaser gave evasive replies. He cited Indian origin and interests in collection of old coins and stamps. He even sent an ID card purporting to an FBI special agent, as shown below.
Finally the friend decided to seek the advice of LEAs.
Once, we received the details, we knew from the start that it was a scam. But to confirm the fraudster’s location, we did bit of social engineering, and sent a link generated by IP Logger. As expected, the location turned out to be India! The number was probably a virtual Whats app number, created using online apps.
How The Process Works:
When a person connects to the internet the details are logged at different places like web browser, local machine, website pinged, ISPs, router etc. E.g., when someone surfs on the internet, the web serves sees the person’s unique IP address. They are assigned to a device each time it connects to the internet and provides a simpler and reliable way for communication. Using IP address, one can find the following details:
So, if you were hosting your own web server, you could have seen all the IP addresses.
Most IP trackers including IP Logger uses an online service that “wraps” a real link for you, tracking the IP address that accesses it before quickly sending the person to the real target of the link.
IP Logger and similar trackers have their limitations, as discussed below:
How To Create A Link For Tracking:
The process of creating a tracking link using IP Logger involves simple steps, explained below:
Step 1: Navigate to the website https://iplogger.org/ and tap on the “Location Tracker”. It will lead to the page as shown below.
Step 2: Click on “Create Location Tracker Link”, which leads to page as shown below:
Here, the page displays the following:
Step 3: Send the IP Logger link to the target. Once the target clicks on the link you shall see the rough geographical location, as shown below:
However, the default link generated by IP Logger finally navigates to a suspicious page. So, we recommend creation of a more disguised link, whose process has been explained below:
How to Create a Disguised Tracking Link:
The process enables to create a link which goes to one of your photo, video, file etc.
Step 1: Upload your file to a cloud service like Google Drive, Dropbox etc. To avoid sharing Personally Identifiable Information (PIIs) you should use a throw-away account, especially if the target is un-trustworthy.
Once the file gets uploaded, create a sharable link.
Step 2: Navigate to “URL and Image Shortner” Section of the IP Logger website. Here, paste sharable link you had created above. Click on the “Get IPLogger Code” button below it.
The next screen shall provide “Your IPLogger link for collecting statistics” and “Link for viewing statistics”. Copy the “Link for viewing statistics” to a safe spot, as it will be needed to view the target’s location later on.
“Your IPLogger link for collecting statistics” is the link that your target must click on. However, the default IP Logger’s link created at this stage, is of the form -
https://iplogger.org/ ….. which most tech savvy users will flag as suspicious.
Hence, we move to our next step.
Step 3: Use a URL shortening service, e.g., Bitly: Unfortunately, URL shortening services generate errors when you directly use IP Loggers URLs. To get around this, click on the iplogger.org drop-down to the right of “Select a domain name that will be used in your IPLogger link” and choose “2no.co” for your domain. The tracking link at the top will update, copy that new link.
After this step, the final link should appear similar to as shown below:
Step 4: Navigate to bit.ly or any other URL shortening service of your choice. If you proceed with bitly, you may have to create a new account, if you haven’t created before. Paste your 2no.co tracking link into the “Paste long URL” box and tap on the “Create” button.
Now, this is the final link you have for your target.
How to See the Recipient’s IP Address:
Send the above link to the person you’re talking to as you would send a standard link. Once, the target clicks on it, he/ she moves to the original file, photo etc whose shareable link you had created (remember!).
At the same, the target’s IP address and other details get stored which can be seen with the help of the “Link for viewing statistics” that you had copied and stored at the safe place.
Final Step: Copy and paste the “Link for viewing statistics” in your web browser. You’ll see the following:
The process doesn’t reveal real location, if the target is using VPN or similar technology. But, it can still be used to verify the claims of the target. Even when the VPN shows a different location, the tracking may show a different country/ location than otherwise claimed. If so, consider walking away from the deal being offered.
