Many people rent their plot or roof for mobile tower installation. Renting out space for tower installation is very easy way to earn income. When people rent their plots for tower installation, they get monthly revenue from the operators.
With the rise of cell-phone users, cellular companies are expanding their services to every part of the country by installing mobile towers. But this has become a new opportunity for fraudsters to cheat people. Fraudsters dupe people in the name of installation of towers on their plots or roofs while offering very high rent.
How this fraud perpetuates?
Fraudster targets innocent people and shows themselves as an officer of a reputed mobile tower company and informs the target that their plots has been chosen for the installation of mobile tower. Fraudster makes false promise to victim that they will receive high rent every month once tower is installed on their plots.
But, in the process of installation of mobile tower, owners are asked to pay a certain amount to get NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) for the set up of the infrastructure. Fraudsters ask owner to deposit the money in their bank account as fee for NOC. Once owner pays that money they become untraceable.
Some fraudsters even provide them fake NOC for the installation of mobile tower which are issued by Department of Telecommunication.
There have been several instances where people have lost their money to these tower installation frauds. For public awareness, TRAI has also been sending SMS to mobile subscribers and informing them about this technique being used by fraudsters to gain easy money.
TRAI has also issued a public notice to this effect on 21st Aug 2014: https://trai.gov.in/sites/default/files/Advertisement-on-fake-companies-eng.pdf
